All Hawaii Invitational 2017 - “The Cultivation of Excellence”

The First Annual All Hawaii Invitational (AHI) was held on June 17, 2017. The event was a focus on “The Cultivation of Excellence,” within the high quality farmers of the Hawaiian Islands. Approximately 40 well-respected growers were invited, representing the islands of Big Island, Maui, Molokai, Oahu and Kauai, and 24 of these growers participated. Well-known guest judges from the Mainland were also invited, to share their expert opinions of the cultivars competing. The event encouraged growers and judges to network and talk story on farming techniques, policies and industry trends — while proudly showcasing Hawaii’s most respected growers and cultivars.

At check-in, the 24 entrants were asked to pick randomly from a deck of cards. The matching cards from two other decks were then matched and placed into the entry jars. The first round of judging was formulated using an iPhone app that randomly shuffled the entrants and populated them within a tournament bracket system. While entrants and judges may have expected to sample and rate each and every entry, this is not possible with 24 entrants and a bracket system.

The AHI will never be a pay-to-play style event, but always an invitational that preserves the integrity of Hawaii by inviting only it’s most respected growers — such as the winner of this year’s event, who is a healer specializing in growing cultivars that offer a host of benefits including pain control, reduction of spastic movements, and seizure reduction. Congratulations, Jimmy Kumu, on your cultivar Valley OG x HP13 winning first place in the 2017 All Hawaii Invitational!

The First Annual All Hawaii Invitational would like to give thanks to all of the growers who came to represent Hawaii’s best. We would also like to thank the guest judges, event coordinators, those who prepared the delicious food, our local musicians, and the hardworking event volunteers. A very special mahalo to Kumu Kekoa Yap and Ua Aloha Maji who blessed our event.
